On this course, Jamie Fyffe introduces standard jazz guitar chord-shapes and key rhythms. No previous experience in jazz is necessary, as it begins with simple 3-note-voicings played over a basic blues. These shapes provide a firm foundation for future modules that explore a broader range of chord types and structures.
Who is this course for?
This course if for people who already play guitar, and want to explore jazz guitar chords, new ways of voicing your chords, and getting to know how to produce a bit of that jazz guitar sound.
In order to get the most out of the course, it is expected that you’ll already know how to play a fair few chords, and maybe how to play bar chords too. If you’re not quite there yet but want to make a start on learning chords, then our Guitar Chord Basics course is a good place to start. Have a go at that, and then come back here!
About your teacher
Jamie Fyffe is an accomplished and experienced performer on guitar, Brazilian percussion, and drum kit. You can hear him in action in the video below with British Blues Awards nominees Blacktop Deluxe. They recorded original music in the studio and toured across the UK and Europe. He currently performs in Sambista – and you’ll get to meet Sambista’s lead singer, Amanda Lucas, in this course too.
He is also presently Module Leader of the Jazz course at University of Plymouth, while also writing a book proposal for Oxford University Press entitled Kind of Blue and the Signifyin(g) Voice of Miles Davis. This builds on his PhD thesis exploring how Davis wrote his seminal album.
Prior to moving to Cornwall, he read music at Leeds College of Music before embarking on a career as a cruise ship musician (Cunard Line and P&O Cruises). During this time, he studied with internationally acclaimed percussionist Dave Hassell, with whom I gained an MA in Musical Performance at University of Salford.
