Back to: Beginner Music Theory – free course
Through this course we are going to look at:
- How to draw Notes
- Learn the names of the notes
- Understand the stave
- How to draw the Treble Clef
- Understand the Treble Clef
- Reading musical notes
We recommend putting aside a little time to do each section of the course (maybe 10 or 15 minutes for each section). This will give time to watch the videos, and then practise using the worksheets or blank manuscript paper that you can print out.
Follow-on Activities
To make music theory relevant and interesting, it is good to ask your teacher for some ideas. But here’s some examples that you’ll be able to do once you know how to write notes for all the letters:
- Composition – choose some notes, write them down, and try playing them on your instrument.
- Musical spelling – what words can you make up that only use the letters between A and G? Can you write the words in musical notes and see if a friend or parent can read them to say the word?
- Learning by ear – try learning a simple tune you know well by ear (finding the notes on your instrument). Once you’ve found the notes, try writing them down.
