Why bother with scales and exercises? This is a question most students ask! But there are some very good reasons….
Technique | Understanding |
---|---|
It helps build muscle strength – don’t overdo it, if it starts to hurt, stop and rest! Then focus on relaxing your hands, arms, and shoulders. | Music is generally in a “key”. Knowing which notes to use in each key helps these become more familiar. |
It helps learn techniques that make playing easier – like how to pass your thumb under the hand to move up and down with more flow. | If you know your way around a key, you can play and improvise with others and hit the right notes! |
It helps with coordination and learning to use both hands separately, then together. | The music is so simple that you can focus on muscle changes, becoming aware of your body, and relaxing. |
With a bit of practice you can learn to play all your other music in a relaxed way, and much faster if you choose! | Once you start to see the patterns in your playing, you understand other music with more depth too. |
Through this course, we’ll also make some surprising discoveries that show there is more to scales than meets the eye!
