Whole-class instrumental learning is a great way to introduce students to learning an instrument, writing their own music, and playing in a class band or ensemble. MusicEL online courses guide you through, with everything you need for a term’s worth of activities.
It is particularly suited to KS2 and KS3, and we have lots more courses in the pipeline for different instruments. But here’s a taste of what is available:
First Access courses
KS1 Ukulele
See full course details here. And here is an introduction for teachers on what is involved. The course is full of tips and resources for teachers. So even if you’ve never played the ukulele before, you’ll be able to use this course to learn, as you teach your class:
Jazz Improvisation
Full course details are here. This can be used with any melodic instrument, and takes you from using 1 note up to 5 notes. With copying, call and response, and improvisation, Andy and James take you and your class through the foundations of jazz:
Music Technology – BandLab
See full course details here. We have a course for primary and one for secondary. Both include handouts and assignments that help introduce key musical concepts (such as harmony and rhythm), whilst exploring creativity and composition.
Samba (coming in January)
If your school has a samba kit (or you’d like to get one), this course has all the resources you need to take a class from scratch. You’ll learn all the different rhythmic components needed to make your own school Samba band!
For schools in Cornwall funding is available from Cornwall Music Education Hub that allows each class (or cohort of students) one free term of first access tuition. A teacher can deliver ten 45 minute sessions. And with MusicEL this is combined with online courses and resources.
Blended Learning for First Access
This allows schools to use the resources and course materials between sessions (students can log on and practice, or the whole class can use them, for example to get ready for an end-of-term class gig).
With on-the-job training from our specialist music teachers, your class teacher will work alongside them in the free term of tuition. And with increased confidence the aim is for the school teacher to be able to use MusicEL courses to deliver first access with other classes, and using the other courses available.
